Ethereum price tumbles below $1,600 facing pressure amid $86 million DeFi capital flight to faster, low-cost rivals like Solana.
Capital Rotation Into Solana Spurs Concerns for Ethereum’s DeFi Dominance
Ethereum (ETH) is facing renewed competitive pressure after nearly $87 million in assets migrated from its ecosystem to rival blockchains in the week following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeal of a controversial decentralized finance (DeFi) regulation.
On April 10, Trump signed a bill overturning a Biden-era mandate requiring DeFi protocols to comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) rules. The reversal was widely interpreted as a win for crypto-native projects, removing a major regulatory overhang that threatened the sector’s permissionless structure.

But for Ethereum — the current hub of DeFi liquidity — the impact has been less than favorable.
According to data from Wormhole, the largest cross-chain bridge on Ethereum, Solana captured the lion’s share of outflows with over $54 million redirected into its ecosystem. Base, Arbitrum, and Avalanche followed, attracting $9.6 million, $5.8 million, and $3.9 million, respectively.
Rapid Transfers from Ethereum Sparks 21% rally for Solana
Notably, the Solana-bound assets were funneled into DeFi protocols such as Jupiter, Kamino, and MarginFi.
Based on the latest data from DefiLlama, Solana TVL has been on a steady rise since Trump’s signing repealed the DeFI law last week.
Solana DeFi Market Cap
As seen in the chart above, Solana TVL increased 12% from $6.1 billion on April 9, to hit the $6.9 million mark at press time on Wednesday, April 16. This shows that investors deposited over $800 million into various Solana native Defi protocols over the past week.
With Solana price currently trading at $135, up 21% on the weekly timeframe. Comparatively, Ethereum price is trading below $1,600 mark, with its 8% gain on the weekly candle, reflecting second lowest returns among the top 10 ranked crypto assets.
Looking Ahead:
The DeFi fund flows observed on the Wormhole bridge further reinforce the narrative that Ethereum could be losing market dominance, as deepening regulatory clarity encourages investors to switch towards rival Layer-1 and Layer-2 protocols.
The ongoing migration trend from Ethereum to faster, lower-cost networks. Ethereum still leads in total value locked (TVL), but this week’s data is a clear signal of shifting momentum.
More so, major institutional players venturing into crypto on new themes like Real-world Asset and securities Tokenization are increasingly opting for alternative layer-1 protocols like Hedera, Avalanche, while Solana and Cardano maintain a strong hold on retail dominance.
Solana, which suffered from performance concerns in 2022, has staged a significant turnaround in both uptime and developer activity.
The network processed over 60 million daily transactions this week, far surpassing Ethereum’s 1.1 million, and maintained average fees below $0.01, according to data from Solana Explorer.
Ethereum Price Forecast: ETH Eyes $1,700 Rebound as Momentum Shifts
Ethereum price forecast charts show early signs of a potential rebound after closing at $1,592.60, gaining 0.24% on the day.
The Bollinger Bands are starting to compress, suggesting a volatility squeeze, with the mid-band resistance at $1,695.42 acting as the first upside target. ETH price is currently attempting to reclaim ground within the lower half of the bands, signaling the possibility of a bullish reversal.
Ethereum Price Forecast
The Parabolic SAR dots have flipped below the candlesticks, which is a classic buy signal in trend-following strategies.
This adds further weight to a bullish Ethereum price forecast, especially as the MACD histogram shifts into green territory for the first time in weeks. The MACD line is rising toward the signal line, suggesting bullish momentum may soon dominate.
If ETH clears $1,695, a push toward the upper Bollinger Band at $1,960 becomes plausible. However, failure to maintain current support near $1,430, ETH price risks a retest of $1,397.19, where the SAR last confirmed support.
47th U.S. President Donald Trump has made a major move by signing an executive order to create a strategic Bitcoin reserve for the United States. This decision puts the U.S. among the few nations officially building a Bitcoin reserve. However, the biggest question is how the government plans to buy BTC without spending taxpayer money. The answer lies in “budget neutral strategies,” but what does that mean?
Trump’s Bitcoin Plan: No Taxpayer Money Involved?
The executive order instructs the Treasury and Commerce Departments to find ways to buy Bitcoin without costing U.S. citizens any extra money. This means the government needs to come up with smart solutions, and experts believe several strategies are on the table.
One idea is to use the increasing value of U.S. gold reserves. This would allow the government to trade some of its gold for Bitcoin, replacing one valuable asset with another.
However, many people who support gold might disagree with this plan because they see gold as an important part of the economy.
Could the U.S. Start Mining Bitcoin?
Another option being explored is Bitcoin mining. Some analysts suggest the government could use underutilized federal resources such as excess computing power and energy from federal data centers to mine BTC.
Bhutan has been doing this since 2019, proving that it’s a viable strategy. However, Bitcoin mining remains a controversial topic in the U.S., especially due to environmental concerns.
Bitcoin-Backed Bonds Be the Answer?
A third strategy being considered is issuing Bitcoin-backed bonds. This approach has already been used by MicroStrategy’s Michael Saylor, who leveraged bonds to acquire over 2% of the Bitcoin supply.
Given that Saylor is scheduled to attend a White House crypto summit, this method could gain serious traction.
U.S. Current Bitcoin Holding
Even though Trump has signed the executive order, additional legislative approval may still be needed to put the Bitcoin reserve plan into action. Currently, the U.S. government holds about 207,189 BTC worth nearly $18.48 billion.
In the past, it sold large amounts of Bitcoin, a move that Trump’s crypto advisor David Sacks criticized as a huge loss for taxpayers.

Grab a coffee to see what data says about the Bitcoin (BTC) price outlook, alongside insights into the current sentiment in the options market. Remember, this being the last Friday of April, monthly options expired today at 8:00 UTC on Deribit.
Strong Market Expectations of Bitcoin Reaching $100,000
Interestingly, Bitcoin traded well above its max pain or strike price of $86,000. Ordinarily, as options near expiration, an asset’s price would tend to gravitate toward its max pain level. While Bitcoin traded for $93,471 minutes before the options expiry, it is now selling for $94,581.
BeInCrypto contacted Bitfinex analysts for insights into the current market outlook and their perspective on what lies ahead for the Bitcoin price in the short term. According to the analysts, Bitcoin’s price could record further upside after clearing option-based resistance.
“Post-expiry, the market is leaning cautiously bullish, and with the $90,000 strike cluster now cleared, there’s less option-based resistance overhead,” Bitfinex analysts told BeInCrypto.
Further, the analysts observed that many traders have rolled exposure to higher strikes, with $95,000 and $100,000 showing increased call open interest for end-April and May expiries.
While this reflects the expected continued upside, the analysts did not rule out a potential short-term chop.
This aligns with Deribit analysts’ statements that the highest open interest for BTC options was around the $100,000 strike price. This indicates strong market expectations of Bitcoin reaching this level.
As BeInCrypto reported, the analysts ascribed this to traders selling cash-secured put options on Bitcoin. These traders also use stablecoins to collect premiums while buying BTC at lower prices.
BeInCrypto also reported that the Cumulative delta (CD) across BTC and related ETF (exchange-traded fund) options on Deribit reached $9 billion. Bitfinex analysts agree, citing rising spot flows and ETF demand.
“Spot flows and ETF demand have picked up significantly for BTC over the past few days and will now continue to dictate if BTC can establish $90,000 as support,” the analysts added.
Meanwhile, these forecasts add to the list of growing bullish bets on Bitcoin’s price, credibly confirming a sentiment shared in the previous US Crypto News publication.
However, despite strong prospects for more Bitcoin price gains, some analysts urge investors to temper their optimism. One is Innokenty Isers, the Chief Executive Officer at Paybis Exchange.
“Current market outlook suggests that Bitcoin price may face more stiff resistance moving forward. In the last two months, the uncertainty around the tariff war triggered an unusual concern for investors as many decided to temporarily steer clear of more volatile assets like Bitcoin,” Isers told BeInCrypto.
Moreover, the Federal Reserve (Fed) has spotlighted the inflationary risks the tariff war may introduce. Nevertheless, Isers acknowledged clear indications of sustained accumulation of BTC by institutional investors and market whales.
This chart shows that the top Bitcoin options by trading volume over the past 24 hours are call options with strike prices of $95,000 and $100,000, ahead of the May 2 expiry.
